A common question families ask is, “Will my dog get along with my kitten?” The truth is, there is no guarantee. Every dog and kitten has a unique personality and successful introductions depend on several factors.
Ragdolls are known for their gentle temperament and often get along well with other dogs and cats. Our kittens are raised in our home with our Labrador Retriever, so they are familiar with dogs from an early age. They are exposed to barking, large movements, and daily interaction with a dog. However, while early exposure can help, it does not automatically guarantee a perfect match with every dog.

Here are a few ways to help predict how your dog may respond to a kitten:

Observe your dog around cats.
If your dog has met a cat before, pay close attention to their reaction. Are they calm and curious? Overly excited? Fixated or attempting to chase? A relaxed response is usually a positive sign.
Try using videos if you do not have access to a cat.
You can test your dog’s reaction by putting on a video of a cat on YouTube. Watch their body language carefully. Do they calmly observe, or do they become intensely focused and excited? For example, when my cats watch squirrel videos, it immediately triggers their hunting instincts. Dogs can show similar prey-drive behaviors. Try this video of kitten's "talking".
Consider your dog’s prey drive and temperament.
Some dogs naturally have a stronger instinct to chase small animals. Breed tendencies, energy level, training, and personality all play a role. A calm, well-socialized dog is generally more likely to adjust successfully to a kitten.
Consider your dog’s impulse control and training.
One of the biggest indicators of success is whether your dog can control their excitement and listen to commands. Does your dog reliably respond to cues like “sit,” “stay,” “leave it,” or “place” even when excited? A dog that can remain calm and responsive is often safer and easier to introduce to a kitten.

Kittens move quickly, dart unexpectedly, and may trigger a dog’s instinct to chase. Teaching and reinforcing impulse control helps your dog pause and look to you for guidance instead of reacting immediately. Even friendly dogs can accidentally overwhelm or injure a small kitten if they become too excited.
Remember that kittens have personalities too.
Some kittens are bold and confident, while others are timid and cautious. A confident kitten may adapt to a dog more quickly than a fearful one.
With patience, supervision, and proper introductions, many dogs and kittens can form wonderful bonds. Some even become inseparable companions.
